LYONS – The Town of Lyons sent out letter to all the electric customers telling them in a rather elaborate fashion that electric rates were going to go up. This might have been a surprise for some, but not many. Everything is going up for the simple reason that it costs more to make things and that includes energy.

LYONS – The Rock n’ River Resort, located at 16858 N. St. Vrain Dr. just west of Lyons, has new owners. Jay and Elaine Hodge recently purchased the resort from Guy Gibson. The Gibsons owned and operated the resort for about 19 years. The Hodges came to Lyons from western Pennsylvania. They lived in Greenville where Jay worked for a while in heavy industry and most recently in human resources.

LYONS – With the recent publicity and appreciation afforded local volunteers and their contributions to the Town of Lyons, it is important to not overlook our own volunteer firefighters. Under the leadership of Lyons Fire Chief J.J. Hoffman and Assistant Chief Paul Davidovich, the Lyons Fire Protection District also experienced a very exciting and productive year.

LYONS – The Board of Trustees, BOT, had a lot of items to cover at the first meeting of the new year but things moved slowly as the board and town staff tried to settle in after returning from holiday vacations. Mayor Julie Van Domelen did not attend this first meeting of the New Year; she was at a Justin Bieber concert with her daughter.

LYONS – While two miniature donkeys were grazing in the early hours of Dec. 21, someone driving along Blue Mountain Road near Lyons, stopped took out a high powered rifle and shot the female donkey, Kaitlin, in the neck and in the chest, killing the small animal. Kaitlin’s brother, Tucker, ran back to the barn, frightened by the noise.

The two donkeys, owned by Bobbie and Tim Watson, were 6 years old. They were pets.

LYONS – After going over a first reading of an ordinance to amend sections of the municipal code which required all annexations over 5 acres, not owned by the town, to go to a vote of the people, the new ordinance was tabled and a public hearing to be held on January 30 was cancelled. A public in put meeting will be held on the 5 acre rule, but it has not been scheduled yet.
