LYONS – My grandmother used to say, “What won’t they think of next?” A few months ago, I was extremely glad that “they” had thought of just what I needed, and organized it and brought it right to me: Home Health Care. “They” turned out to be Estes Park Home Health Care. I was so grateful and impressed that I wanted to share the news, in case others, like me, might not know about this program.

LYONS – In the weeks after the tsunami, it became clear that the nuclear power plants at Fukushima were going to become a long-term problem.

Harumi Noguchi of Kamakura wrote about the effect on Tokyo. She described the change in light and sound, noting that the bright neon glitter was gone. Restaurants would dim the lights, even serving by candlelight. She noticed that this was not only tolerable, but actually really pleasant. Her conclusion is that so much of our electric use is far beyond what we really need, and that this event gives us the opportunity to change our use of resources. Of course, this goes for the world as a whole, and even as the lights come back on, the debate grows.

LONGMONT – Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs, genetic engineering, GE, and anti-GMO stories seem to be in the news nearly every day. The record would seem to indicate that concerns about GMOs are leading to anxiety and growing unease. But aren’t genetically engineered foods substantially equivalent to the foods we’ve been eating for the past 12,000 years? Haven’t we been tinkering with carrots and beans and food crops all over the world, for all sorts of reasons, for a very long time? Why worry about GMOs? The U.S. government says GMOs are substantially equivalent and therefore healthy.

LYONS – Thirty years ago I used to run five miles a day, five to six days a week, for my cardiovascular training. I finally decided this was depleting my energy and causing too many body parts, especially my joints, to hurt so I cut way back on the frequency.

LYONS – More than 30 million children (ages five to 17) are participating in organized sports in the US. This is great news as sports can be useful tools in helping children develop physically, mentally and socially. Unfortunately, there is also bad news; kids participating in sports are at risks for injuries. It is estimated that 20 percent of participants will sustain a sports related injury. While most injuries are minor, 20 to 25 percent are serious. Overuse injuries (injuries that occur from repetitive stress on the musculoskeletal system) are becoming more prevalent. These injuries are more complicated in a child and can affect normal growth and development.
