Biz Buzz: Upholstery Shop opens a new business
LYONS – The Upholstery Shop, 401 Main St., will soon have a new business in the front of the shop called the Orchard. Georgia English, shop owner, is about to launch the Orchard on November 12 after she does a little remodeling on her upholstery shop located behind the Art Bank on Fourth Avenue.
The new shop will have handmade leather bags, creams and lotions, throw pillows, towels, handmade jewelry by three different jewelers, some furniture from the Upholstery Shop and some of English’s handmade clothing designs. There will be hats, belt buckles, glassware and many other items. A grand opening for the new shop will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 12.
English bought the shop about one year ago on Nov. 1, 2010 from Bill Adams and Donna Moore who sold the shop to English then moved to Hawaii. English worked for them for a year before buying the shop. Prior to working in the upholstery business, English designed clothing as Peach Pavlova. She originally came to the U.S. 17 years ago from Australia. She was doing a lot of work with horses at that time. She has twin boys at Lyons Elementary School.
“I started sewing out of necessity,” English said. “I love clothing so I learned to sew. I lived in Austin (Texas) and I wanted to copy the styles. I would look at the clothing in stores and then draw a picture. I would also redo vintage clothing. Lyons is the first place I have lived that I felt like I could live here because it has that small country town feel and when you have kids the community supports you.”
Chester Nuels, who has worked in upholstery for over 40 years, comes up to work at the shop two days a week and Jill Jacobs is an assistant seamstress and upholsterer. The Upholstery Shop also works on auto upholstery, restoration, drapes, cushions, boat and motorcycle seats, patio furniture and many other items. English has a contract with the Boulderado Hotel and several other firms for upholstery work.
Quotes can be done in person or you can take a photo of your item and e-mail it to English for a quote. There are many fabric samples on hand to choose from.
English has many talents and along with her upholstery business, her new shop opening and her clothing designs, she teaches Zumba at Mayama Dance Studio, located behind the Stone Cup. “I took a class four years ago in Little Rock, Arkansas and I found it was the only exercise I liked so I got certified to teach Zumba,” said English. Zumba is a high energy series of movements which combine several South American dance forms.
Shop hours are Mon. through Fri. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the Upholstery Shop at 303-823-6698 or Georgia English on her cell at 303-809-4233 or contact peachpavlova@yahoo.com.
New acupuncture studio opens
LYONS – A new acupuncture studio has opened its doors in Lyons. Amber Russell Acupuncture, LLC is a private acupuncture and allergy treatment studio located in the heart of Main Street (above the Barking Dog Café). Licensed acupuncturist Amber Russell hopes to incorporate her specialty, NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique) into the Lyons’ thriving medical community.
Being a long time allergy sufferer herself, Russell instantly connected with NAET. She was treated for her own allergies and had amazing results. Her experience inspired her to complete her training in NAET.
NAET uses a combination of oriental medical theory, acupuncture/acupressure, and kinesiology to determine allergens and reduce the body’s reaction to them. Acupressure can be used instead of needling, making NAET ideal for children or anyone who is uncomfortable with needles. Russell has additional training using NAET to manage a variety of disorders which include: chronic fatigue, ADD/ADHD, autism, fibromyalgia, anxiety, asthma, headaches, arthritis, and much more. In addition to NAET, Russell practices traditional Taoist medicine. This includes acupuncture, Qi Kung, Feng Shui, and astrology.
Amber Russell received her Master’s Degree in acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii. During her time as a student, she spent a semester abroad in China studying under Taoist masters. She is certified by the NCCAOM as a Diplomat of Acupuncture and licensed by the State of Colorado. In addition to her acupuncture training, Russell holds Basic, Advanced I and Advanced II certificates in NAET.
Treatments are by appointment only, Tuesday through Sunday. Package deals and child rates are available. Russell currently accepts workmen’s compensation and no-fault insurance, and within the next few months she plans on accepting major medical insurance as well. More information can be found on her website www.AmberRussellAcupuncture.com or call 720- 445-LYON (5966).
Matsuri has new menu items
LYONS – “We have several new items and also the specials that we are thinking about putting on the menu regularly depending on how popular they get,” said Yumi Sueyoshi, who is a co-owner of Matsuri with her husband Taka.
“We have chicken katsu which is a lightly breaded fried chicken. This is the newest entree and it comes with miso soup and rice,” said Yumi. For the changing season, “many of you know our famous flu-killer miso ginger garlic soup,” Yumi says. “Ginger has been used as both seasoning and medicine for many years and its effectiveness against headaches has been documented. It is said to can shorten the discomfort of headaches, colds and flu. Garlic is well known to increase stamina. The seven spices in the soup are said to clear a blocked sinus. All these powerful ingredients actually blend nicely and taste good. With this soup you can both eat nutritious food and get your body ready for the flu season.
“Matsuri also offers a dish for eel lovers!” says Yumi. “It is called hitsumamushi, which is a famous dish from Nagoya region in Japan. Chunks of eel lie on top of steamed rice and are served with wasabi, pickled vegetables and bonito soup. The most popular appetizer these days is called Rock’n’Roll Jalapeno. This was served by Taka to our very regular customers, and then people started talking about how good it is and many customers started asking and it was added to our daily special.
“We also started carrying rum and vodka. We have Japanese vodka made of barley and wheat called sho-chu. We make wonderful cocktails with that, such as green apple, plum, yuzu (Japanese citrus), lemon, and calpico (Japanese milky flavored drink). Now we can serve rum and coke, vodka tonic or other simple drinks using these liquors. These are not on the regular menu, but we can do that.
“In this coming April we are going to have our third anniversary already, and we really appreciate your business and support. We are very happy and enjoy making Matsuri a comfortable place and creating preferable new menus for our wonderful customers, and we really appreciate your opinions and ideas.”
