Fun summer events in Hygiene
Redstone Review
HYGIENE – The Willow Farm Summer Concert Series will hold a concert on July 18 sponsored by the Longmont Council for the Arts. Sound of Music Around the Globe with Steve Mullens and Friends will be held at 7 p.m. July 18 at Willow Farm, 11898 N. 75th St. in Hygiene. This concert is part of the LCA’s Sunday Afternoon Concert Series. Jeff Stratton of the Boulder Weekly called it “some of the most innovative and unique music to emerge from this area.”
The next Willow Farm concert in the series, Laughing Hands, will be held on August 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Willow Farm. Michael Roberts of Westword called the group “acoustic string wizards, jazzy bluegrass and musical exotica often verging on the exquisite.”
The concerts will be held at 11898 N. 75th Street in Hygiene. Tickets are $12. For information, call Willow Farm at 303-772-5338 or LAC at 303-687-7869.
Hygiene Legend: Apple the cow
Local resident Nancy Dayton, owner of Apple the cow, reported that a bear had come into her yard looking to feed on Apple’s apples. They touched noses and when Apple the cow
realized she had something to lose here, she chased the bear away. Now this happened almost two years ago and it was reported in the national press. Resident of the property Penny Cox was there to take the pictures and tell the story. Cox is a wonderful artist and has produced a great pencil drawing of the incident. Apple now graces the front of T-shirts illustrating the Hygiene legendary resident that Cox designed for sale. These organic red cotton T-shirts are now selling at Boulder County General Store, 11809 N. 75th St. in Hygiene. Another pencil drawing is also available.
Hygiene Summer Art/Farm Camp
Give your children the opportunity to express their creativity at the Hygiene Summer Art/Farm Camp at 7453 Hygiene Rd. in Hygiene. The camp is held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10: a.m. to 3 p.m. and the cost is $195 per week. The camp is for kids ages 5 to 13 and limited to 12 students. Everyday we will feed the animals and play with the chickens and goats, collect eggs, work in the garden, harvest and eat the vegetables, observe nature. These experiences will be the inspiration for art. The classes will be taught by Mary Magdalena, a licensed art teacher who loves to bring out the best in her students. Her farm is a wonderful environment in which to learn, play and create: offering drawing and painting, sculpture, clay and Native American arts. Spaces are still available. The camp will run through August 12. For more information contact Mary Magdalena at 303-652-4004 or msmarymagdalena@gmail.com
