For the month of July and August, the gallery at the Stone Cup Café will exhibit Flowers in the Wild, paintings by celebrated local artist Sally White King. Live music will feature the Prairie Scholars, singer-songwriters Andy and Jessica Eppler, on July 16; the Indie-Gypsy Chamber Folk band Taarka on July 23; bluegrass band the Fairwell Drifters, who are also appearing at the Rocky Grass, on July 24; Todd Patrick Livingston and Trucker’s Daughter, bluegrass and honky-tonk on July 25; and Scorpion Machine Gun, rooks, rock, and Americana music on August 6. The 38th Annual Rocky Grass Festival takes place from July 18 to 22 with a weeklong run-up of small classes with world-class professional musicians. Take the opportunity toimmerse yourself as an active participant in the world of bluegrass, including jamming sessions, vocal coaching, songwriting, one-on-one instruction, and a broad variety of electives from improvisation to musical history. It has been 20 years since the modest “summit on the song” was started in Estes Park. Now known as Folks Festival at Planet Bluegrass, it will be held August 13 through 15 at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch. It has created its own culture and spirit, and become a favorite way to spend a glorious Colorado summer weekend celebrating stories and songs from around the musical and geographic world. Oscar Blues Cajun Grill & Brewery at 303 Main Street hosts a great variety of live music almost every night. The Lyons Garden Club has brought Sally King’s bear sculptures to the corner of Fifth and High Streets as part of a landscaping project.
Bear heads are popping up at the corner of Fifth Avenue and High Street as the Lyons Garden Club’s landscaping and sculpture by Sally King are taking shape at the beginning of the pathway that leads up Colorado Highway 66 to Planet Bluegrass and up to Eagle Canyon. Watch for the changes.
Boulder
The Boulder Dinner Theatre, 5501 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder, is pleasing families all over the area with J.M. Barrie’s timeless tale, Peter Pan. The now 105-year-old boy who will never grow up still speaks to disconnected youngsters of all ages. Peter Pan will be a perfect introduction to theater for many kids. Directed by Scott Beyette and starring Joanie Brosseau-Beyette and Brian Norber, Peter Pan plays through Sept. 5. Tickets are from $25 to $55. Colorado Music Festival continues the musical festivities through August 6. Led by music director Michael Christie, the festival takes place at the picturesque Chautauqua Auditorium and celebrates music beyond the classical genre. The festival orchestra performs every Thursday and Friday. The Brahms Festival will continue with Symphony No.2 and No.4, Piano Concerto no.2, and Double Concerto for Violin and Cello on July 15, 16, and 18. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition can be heard on July 22 and 23. On July 29 and 30 the program will bring the audience to the Wagnerian world with Tristan and Isolde: Prelude and Love-Death, and Maazel’s The Ring without Words. The festival finale will take place on August 5 and 6 with Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Every Tuesday evening is World Music Series. The remaining concerts include Solas, the most popular and exciting Celtic band in the U.S., and Zoe Keating, avant cello with Apex Contemporary Dance Theatre. Colorado Shakespeare Festival this year presents The Taming of the Shrew and Measure For Measure by Shakespeare, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, and the Fantasticks by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones. King Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs will continue at Denver Art Museum through January 9, 2011. This is King Tut’s first appearance in Denver and the only stop at the Rocky Mountain West. See breathtaking treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb—including the golden sandals found on his mummy and a canopic jar that held his internal organs—and visit the largest image of King Tut ever unearthed, a ten-foot statue found at the remains of a funerary temple. Encounter artifacts from other powerful rulers and learn about the pharaohs’ function in both the earthly and divine worlds. Plus, relive the excitement of Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery of King Tut’s tomb and explore new scientific discoveries that provide insight into the Boy King’s legendary life and death.
