Obituary: Thomas Richard Moffitt Nov. 23, 1956 – May 29, 2010
Tom Moffitt was born on November 23, 1956 in Creston, Iowa and died May 29, 2010 in Lyons. He was 53. He was the youngest of six children born to Lois Ann (Shafer) and Marion Earl Moffitt. Raised mostly on the farm, he was very fond of fishing and hunting, and spent much of his youth hiking around the Iowa woods.
When his parents divorced he moved to Lyons in the 1960s with his father and stepmother, Dee.
His grandmother Daisy Moffitt owned a nursing home on Evans Street. He attended school in Lyons and worked for his family’s restaurant, Dee’s Café on Main Street.
Mr. Moffitt was a natural athlete and excelled in most sports. He played on the LHS football team that won Class A State Champs in 1975, when he was a senior. He was named All Conference in football in his junior year. After graduating, he was involved in Golden Gloves boxing, fighting for the B novice championship in 1980. He was known in his youth as a vibrant, handsome, outgoing young man in town, always ready with a smile.
Friends of Mr. Moffitt will remember him as an outstanding softball player in Lyons men’s league, playing for Hirschfield Backhoe for several years. He worked in construction, mostly for Flatirons Structures, in concrete. He also worked as a framer and had other carpentry jobs.
He was attached to his Iowa roots and would return there, to the Afton, Creston, Diagonal area and stay for years at a time, but he seemed to always want to come back to the mountains and streams near Lyons.
Mr. Moffitt is survived by his brother Pete (Cindy) Moffitt of Lyons, and Cherie (Don) Woods of Council Bluffs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Mike and Ted Moffitt and his sister Judy Smith.
Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Service in Longmont. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, at the Apple Valley Farmstead on Apple Valley Road, Lyons.
