Shred It

LYONS – Lyons Valley Bank and Trust will hold a free community document shred event from 9 a.m. to noon on June 5. Everyone is welcome to bring three copy boxes or one large bag full of confidential materials. These materials can include bank statements older than three months, credit card statements older than three months, medical records older than seven years, utility bills older than three months, tax returns older than seven years, pay check stubs older than end-of-the-year summary, cancelled checks, credit card offers, ATM receipts, investment statements and many other things. Valley Bank is located at the corner of Second Avenue and East Main Street.

LCF benefit swap meet

LYONS – Do you have some good stuff that you don’t have use for anymore but don’t want to bother with a garage sale? Donate it to the Lyons Community Foundation and we will sell it at our booth during the Third Annual Swap Meet and Celebration at Lyons Village Central on Monday, May 31 (Memorial Day). Visit the swap from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for music, food, drinks, and lots of great second-hand stuff. Booths are selling fast but are still available for rent for $20 each with $15 going the Lyons Community Foundation and $5 going to the Lyons Youth Baseball Softball Association. Poets meet

LYONS – The Lyons Itinerant Poet Society, LIPS, will meet at 7 p.m. on May 20 at the Lyons Town Hall. A group of poets from Boulder will join the group in Lyons for a night of poetry reading. Writing workshop

LYONS – Creative writing, journalism, poetry, and various journaling workshops are offered each summer in the mountains of Colorado. These economically priced workshops include lodging at a mountainside B&B retreat near Estes Park, and fresh meals. Students write all weekend. Instructions are given, then there’s a writing assignment, and then students return and discuss the results. Classes are limited to three people, so there is plenty of personalized attention. They are taught by award-winning journalist and book author Kathleen Spring. This is the 12th year for Spring Time Writers Workshops. Cost is $555 for workshop, lodging and meals, with a discount if you bring a second student to share the room. Johnson receives an award

BOULDER – The 17th annual Boulder County Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month’s award ceremony was held on Monday, May 10 at  the Chautauqua Community House in Boulder. The event featured Boulder County, Boulder and the Boulder Heritage Roundtable recognizing individuals who landmarked their property in the City and County in 2009, acknowledging authors who published local history books in the past year, and honoring individuals who have made exceptional contributions to preserving Boulder County’s heritage.

This year LaVern Johnson received a special project award for her efforts on behalf of the Lyons History Museum for the 2009 historic preservation project at the museum.

Cheese making class

LYONS – A cheese making class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 6. The cost is $35 per person.  Please RSVP to betsyburton@mac.com. In the cheese making class we will discuss the broad spectrum of cheese from fresh to aged, stinky to mild, and bloomy to washed rind. We will focus on making cheeses that are easily made in the home including mozzarella, ricotta, and chevre as well as pairings for cheese. Hilary Van Dusen has been making artisanal goat cheese for Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy for two years. She works primarily with raw milk cheeses, and her cheeses have won several awards at the American Cheese Society and World Cheese Competition.

Good Old Days

LYONS – Lyons Good Old Days Celebration will be held on June 25 and 26. The 34th annual celebration will focus on bringing people closer to downtown to celebrate with the “Midway on High Street” consisting of the sandstone grandstand booked throughout the weekend with popular local musicians and acts, street dance, food and beer garden, games and rides, and various other entertainments. The Sandstone Art Fair will be held in Sandstone Park. Good Old Days favorites like the softball tournament, Lyons River Run 5K, pancake breakfast, and KidSpace presented by the River Church, all will return. The 2010 Good Old Days stands to be one of the finest with music, food, and fun for the entire family in downtown Lyons. Lyons Outdoor Games

LYONS – The Oskar Blues Brewery Lyons Outdoor Games presented by Smith Optics will be held at Sandstone Park June 11 through 13. This is the eighth year of the games.

Lyons Parks and Recreation Director David Cosgrove said, “We have the world’s best professional athletes competing such as kayakers Tao Berman, Joe Keck, and Scott Shipley, who actually lives here but we also have plenty of opportunities for beginners to learn new skills and for the everyday athlete to test his mettle.”

The games have also become a place for fly fishers to showcase their talents and for dog lovers to exhibit the aptitude of their well trained pets. Organizers have added some new events in 2010, including more bike and kayak races plus a couple of family events for anyone who likes a challenge. “We are really excited about being in Sandstone Park again this year,” said Reed Far, lead event organizer and Lyons resident. “I have been part of the games for several years, and it’s thrilling to see how they have grown and how much the Town of Lyons residents and businesses have embraced the event.”

The mountain sports will take place throughout the town’s various world-class facilities: biking events will be located in Bohn Park, freestyle kayaking will take place at the Black Bear Hole, slalom kayaking will occur at the October Hole, and the creek race will happen on the South Saint Vrain River. Additionally, the dog events will take place at the Lyons Valley River Park Ponds, and the Kurt Carlson Skateboard Park will be the location for the skateboarding comp.  On Friday night right after skateboarding the Yellow Design Stunt Team will perform a big air bike trick demo using ramps on the street next to Sandstone Park.

The event begins with a kick-off party in Sandstone Park, sponsored by Oskar Blues. Saturday’s events start with some bike comps in Bohn Park and a kayak freestyle at the Black Bear Hole (on the east side of Lyons across from the Black Bear Restaurant). Spectator-friendly competitions will be held throughout the weekend including freestyle kayaking and creek racing on the Class V waters of the South St. Vrain, mountain bike short track racing and jump competitions. The dogs will be competing for speed and splash in the speed retrieve and canine cannonball competitions. The games also include clinics. “If you’re interested in casting a fly rod or learning how to loop a kayak, this is the event to attend,” Cosgrove adds. “We’ve got some of the world’s most elite athletes on board to teach these classes and do demos.”

County seeks volunteers

LYONS – Workers are needed at Walker Ranch on May 23 to help restore unhealthy forests and meadow ecosystems.  Using hand tools, you will thin unnaturally dense stands of small ponderosa pine trees.  The work is part of a larger restoration plan that will re-establish natural forest systems and improve wildlife habitat. This project runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Minimum age is 14 with adult supervision. To register, please email WildWorkVolunteers@BoulderCounty.org or call 303-678-6216.

Kids’ kayaking club

LYONS – Kids can enroll in a Kayaking Club. The eight-week kids’ kayaking club will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Dates for the classes are: May 18, 20, 25, 27; and June 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29; and July 1, 6, 8. Kids ages eight to 14 are invited to join. The purpose of these classes is to provide a positive and safe learning environment for kids to learn the fundamentals of the sport of kayaking and the ethics and appreciation for the exceptional outdoor resources found in the Lyons community. This eight-week instructional course will take place on the St. Vrain River. Classes are intended for beginners and all registrants must know how to swim and will be expected to sign a waiver. Parents must provide transportation to and from the drop-off point at the Black Bear Hole Parking Lot. The courses will be limited to the first ten individuals to sign up through the Lyons Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Events. The fee for the course is $640 for Lyons residents and $740 for non-residents. Those providing their own full set of kayak equipment for instructional purposes may subtract $100 from the class fee. Beausoleil has vast experience teaching all levels of kayaking from first day beginners to advanced creek boaters. Beausoleil is an ACA certified Level 4 Instructor with extensive swift water rescue qualifications.

5K River Run

The annual 5K River Run will be held on June 27 along the St. Vrain River through scenic vistas of Lyons. It is brought to you by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Events and a host of local sponsors.
