LYONS – Working in finance for a city government is Jody McClurkin’s dream job.
“I really love city government,” said McClurkin. “I love the numbers, the legal ease and the security. Numbers have their own story to tell. It’s like forensics. CPAs (certified public accountants) get the best of three worlds. We get the numbers, we get the legal aspect, and the psychology of dealing with people. I enjoy this type of work.”

Jody McClurkin, Lyons’ new finance director, calls working in finance for a city government her dream job.
McClurkin said that she has been working in finance and accounting for 30 years. Her last job was working at Loveland Village Good Samaritan Society, a skilled nursing facility in a retirement campus. She worked there for six months before being laid off due to budget cuts.
Before that she worked at Clifton Gunderson CPAs, a national CPA firm in Broomfield. She was laid off after about a year and a half. McClurkin said that she hopes this job will be permanent for her. She lives in Longmont.
Prior to working for Clifton Gunderson CPAs, McClurkin worked in the city attorney’s office in Longmont. “I worked for Rodrigo Rangel, the city’s prosecutor,” said McClurkin. “I proofed the city’s ordinances. I actually worked with all the attorneys in the office. I liked the work because I wanted to learn about the courts. I worked there from 1999 to 2001. I was going to school in the evenings at Regis University in Denver.”
McClurkin received a bachelor of science in accounting and a minor in finance from Regis and graduated magna cum laude. “I am considering going back to Regis to get a master’s in finance,” she said.
“I am hoping to stay in this job for a long time,” said McClurkin, who is married and has a son. “My son is graduating from Silver Creek High School and he is going to Marine boot camp, but he will be a reservist.”
McClurkin said she has worked for non-profits, corporations and city governments and she likes city government the best. “I really like the staff here,” she said. “These guys are just incredible. I love the work. This is a good fit for me.”
McClurkin began her duties at Lyons finance director on May 12. She is responsible for creating the town budget which goes to the town board for approval and for updating the town board on all the fund balances.
