Hundreds of thousands of Coloradans are without health insurance. Many more are underinsured, receiving no preventative care. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the statewide 9Health Fair, where anyone 18 years of age and older can participate in free or low-cost health screenings. “Each year, nearly 5 percent of our participants receive a critical or alert call from 9Health Fair nurses, helping catch serious health issues before they become emergencies,” said Jim Goddard, President and CEO of the annual fair
Last year 91,165 people from Colorado and beyond took part in the health screenings at 155 sites. Of those participants, 87,179 had blood chemistry screening, providing baseline information on blood glucose, cholesterol, liver, kidneys, thyroid levels and more. This important screening is available for only $30, and for $15 a blood count is available to screen for anemia, immune function and other early signs of disease.
The Lyons fair will require about 100 volunteers. The opportunities for you to personally make a difference start now. About half of the volunteers need to be medical professionals, including phlebotomists, nurses, doctors, PAs, pharmacists and dentists. Half are non-medical community members who organize and oversee, do paperwork, make phone calls and help people navigate the event site. You can volunteer and still get your own screenings. Make a list today of health professionals and friends that you know, and invite them to take part.
To volunteer, or for more information, please go to www.9healthfair.org and register as a volunteer for Lyons site #811. One of our team members will contact you after you have registered. If you have questions, please contact Sara Borst (sara.borst@colorado.edu or 823-5241). Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all volunteers. This event is sponsored by the Lyons Community Foundation, the Lyons Community Church, and the Lyons Lions.
