Searching for a family for a baby fox
Redstone Review
LONGMONT – This week Greenwood opened its doors like any other day with an unexpected guest: a two-week old red fox kit. It’s a bit early in the season for baby foxes to be born, but it is with delight that we take this little girl under our wing (pun intended) with intentions of raising her into an adult to be released back into the wild.
Prima, as she has been named, just opened her eyes a few days ago. She was found orphaned and brought to us infested with fleas but otherwise healthy. She was immediately rehydrated and slowly weaned onto her specialized formula. She spends her time in her padded “den” with a small ticking clock to replicate her mother’s heartbeat. Unfortunately, she is not with other kits. It is very important for young foxes to be raised among others so Greenwood has put calls into other rehabs in Colorado in search of a littermate to provide essential socialization.
Raising any baby at Greenwood takes a lot of time and effort. Currently, she goes home with
our animal care manager, who has to wake up nightly to provide required feedings. Soon she will be able to remain at the center overnight when midnight feedings are not required. Prima is currently looking for sponsors to help provide monetary support for her care including specialized diets and supportive care. You can learn more about sponsoring her on our website.
You can also help Greenwood by visiting our thrift store. The new improved look and expanded retail space provides room for new merchandise daily. Here you can shop for those hard-to-find and unique treasures. You’ll discover something different each day, and every purchase helps the animals in our care. Donations are welcomed during business hours and we are always in need of gently used items. Visit the store at 3083 Walnut St. in Boulder, or phone 303-245-0800.
