2009 banner year for Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center
Redstone Review
LONGMONT – Here’s to a grand year in 2009. This year we made leaps and bounds at Greenwood including our brand new building, new volunteers and a staff that has excelled in making it their mission to give the animals the best care possible. We want to extend a warm thanks to our supporters who have donated to make this all possible.
This year was a first for our premiere event “Wild Night for Wildlife”, which netted $36,500 which is quite an accomplishment for Greenwood. We are already planning for next year and hope to make it an even bigger success.
As we enter into the new year, we carry over some patients who have really touched us this year including the two red foxes that came in separately but have
been paired up for companionship. The first arrived in October when she was hit by a car on Sunshine Canyon in Boulder. She lay on the side of the road for days before a good Samaritan picked her up and brought her to Greenwood.
The second fox had become entangled in twine and when she tried to jump over a fence, got stuck and hung there overnight in freezing weather. She was almost dead when she arrived and had to be revived with heat and fluids. Aside from a crucial wound to her leg, she is doing great and will be released soon.
We’ve also been seeing many animals including raccoons, pheasants, squirrels and songbirds being struck by cars. It’s important to remember not to throw food scraps out your car window because although they are compostable, they are bait for wild animals to walk out onto the road.
The busy season is soon approaching and we will start recruiting for volunteers again! If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now’s the time. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities and ways to donate on our website at www.greenwoodwildlife.org or call Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at 303-545-5849.
