2009 Christmas Baskets
LYONS – For 20 years, the Rev. Sam Tallent, with the help of many people, has been making sure that families and seniors in need have received food baskets at Christmas time. Food drives are currently being held at both the elementary school and the junior/senior high school. Donations are appreciated.
The Boulder County Sheriffs will again be partnering with Sam Tallent to make sure children age 16 and under in families will also receive Christmas gifts. Volunteers will be gathering at the Lyons Community Church at the corner of Main Street and Fourth Avenue on Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20 to sort and pack boxes. The Christmas boxes will be picked up on Monday December 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the church basement.
Financial donations, which are always much needed, can be dropped off at the Stone Cup. Checks should be made payable to Higher Ground Ministries. Call Sam for more information at 303-823-2345.
Christmas Eve Service
LYONS – Come celebrate our Fifth Annual Community Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on Thursday, December 24, at 7 p.m., in the Wildflower Pavilion at Planet Bluegrass. Dress warmly and experience the music of our outstanding local musicians and the joy of being together with friends, neighbors and family. The Rev. Sam Tallent will officiate. A love offering will be taken. All checks can be made payable to Higher Ground Ministries. For more information, call Sam Tallent at the Stone Cup, 303-823-2345.
Fundraiser includes Lyons
LYONS – When Lyons resident Sharon McConnell watched the News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), Channel 6 at 6 p.m. recently, the station was offering different gifts for its fundraiser. One of the pledge offerings was to feed a local family of four for a week for $120, instead of taking a book, DVD, or CD. “I called to pledge because I’m a firm believer in public broadcasting,” said McConnell. “I asked if Lyons was on the food bank list and they said it was, so that is where I designated my pledge to go and you can do it too.”
Acupuncture opens
LYONS – Community acupuncture sessions will begin on January 14. Effective, affordable acupuncture for everyone will be provided by local, experienced acupuncturists Carol Conigliaro and Julie Smith. Community style, low cost acupuncture is available from $20 to $40 (pay what you can). They are open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lyons Community Glen House on Second Ave. behind Andrea’s Homestead Café on Main Street. Appointments are preferred, and walk-ins are accepted. An open house will take place on Sunday January 10 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lyons Glen Community House. Meet the practitioners, ask questions, check out the space, enjoy music and healthy snacks. For information, call 303-819-7669.
Cookie Extravaganza
LYONS – The Annual Holiday Cookie Extravaganza is hosted this year by Lyons Girl Scout Daisy Troop 3982 to decorate holiday cookies. All the cookies are then put into huge food baskets that are given to local families in need. These baskets are coordinated and distributed by Sam and Mindy Tallent of Higher Ground Ministries. Decorating will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16 at the Odd Fellows Hall on High Street. All people of all ages are invited! Drop by for a few minutes, or stay for the whole time (there will be A LOT of cookies to decorate!). In years past, this has been a great time to connect with one another. Please bring enthusiasm, frosting, icing, sprinkles, sugar crystals, any fun holiday cookie decorating stuff. For information, contact Elizabeth Lennert at 823-5939 or elizabeth@4X6.org. Volunteers are needed before, during or after the event.

Parents are welcome to encourage all types of organized and unorganized play during these sessions. Recreational equipment may be utilized via the department with advanced notice. The open gym is being held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. through March 30, 2010. All children must be accompanied by a parent (no drop-offs) and supervision is expected.
