Lyons
The Stone Cup Café will be showing imagery and fiber of Lisa Joyce for the month of December. The Taos-based artist and musician enjoys spending time in Lyons at the annual Song School. Her photography features semi-abstract compositions of nature, landscape, snow, sand, as well as unusual subjects such as mailboxes and barbed wires. Her fiber art also shows the artist’s sense of form, color, and fun, with stylish hats made from recycled wool felt scraps that are hand-dyed and sewn into freeform shapes. The cozy and environmentally conscious Stone Cup Café is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and High Street. Visit www.lisajoycedesigns.com for more information about the artist; call 303-823-2345 about the show.

Kahlie Sue Pinello is the next featured artist at the Stone Cup. An opening reception for her show of whimsical painted mirrors is scheduled for Jan. 8.
In January Kahlie Sue Pinello, daughter of Jake Pinello will display her art work at the Stone Cup. Her art work, her dream, her medium consists of found mirrors and anything else that tickles her fancy. “Different mirrors are asking for what comes next; paint, and then some humor, bright colors, mouse traps, dominos, marbles, stone, and more. They are all as different as the beginning product,” she said. “My dad is the artist who opened the doors for my work. Together we paint murals, through good times and bad. As family and teacher, we have painted together for 20 some years. We paint under the name Flat Rabbit Murals.” There will be a celebratory opening at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 8 at the Stone Cup at the corner of Fifth Avenue and High Street.
The next High Street Concert will be held on January 16 featuring the Long Road Home and Acoustic Mining Company. Calling all student creative writers: all Lyons students ages 8 to 18 who live in the greater Lyons area or are currently in St. Vrain School District are eligible to participate. Students are asked to pen short stories from one of the following Greek myths, focusing the language on expressing the beauty, horror, and suspense of the transformation, and capturing the dreamlike, playful, and fantastical quality of these ancient tales using 400 to 650 words. Each contestant can submit up to three entries on Pygmalion, Arachne, Io, Narcissus, Daphne, and Hyacinthus. The deadline is March 15, 2010.
A panel will review the entries and announce the winners by March 25. The selected story will be featured at the 2010 Sounds of Lyons’ production Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is an experimental ensemble piece that combines stories from Greek mythology and music of impressionist composers Satie, Szymanowsky and Ravel, woven together to portray the sonic world of transformation. Winners will have the opportunity to participate in the ensemble cast with the world-class musicians of Sage String Quartet, and to recite the story on stage, or listen to the interpretation of another reader, if desired. The writer of each winning entry will receive two Sounds of Lyons festival passes ($70 value), a $20 gift certificate good for any purchase at select local stores in Lyons, and the privilege of presenting artistic work to our community. Congratulations to Sounds of Lyons, which has been recognized as the top recipient of the Neodata Endowment Grant from Boulder County Arts Alliance. The BCAA is instrumental in promoting and facilitating cultural communities on the Front Range. There were many highly competitive applications, presenting a wide range of artistic endeavors and established non-profit art organizations throughout Boulder County. Along with Sounds of Lyons, those receiving the $1000 grant include Boulder Bach Festival, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Now or Never Theatre, Helander Dance Theatre, Boulder Ballet, Society for Creative Aging, Michelle Ellsworth, Square Product Theatre, After Hour Arts, and Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra. As a new festival stepping into its second season in June of 2010, Sounds of Lyons is quickly capturing the attention of the art scene with its refreshing, accessible, and innovative ways of presenting classical music.
Next season’s program will explore further the three directions characteristic of Sounds of Lyons: traditional chamber music, experimental ensemble piece, and musical journey. We will invite back the Sage String Quartet to collaborate with renowned clarinetist and CU professor Daniel Silver, and present two productions, Metamorphosis, inspired by Greek mythology and Passage: Finding Bach, built around Bach’s second violin partita. Boulder Dinner Theatre, 5501 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, now features the all-time favorite Singin’ In The Rain through February 14. Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art’s current exhibition includes The Surface and Beneath by California-based artist Heather Wilcoxon, whose paintings lie in the intersection between folk art, outside art and expressionism. Her work chronicles her view of misguided politics, greed, narcissism, power mongering, the military industrial complex, and the destruction of our planet. Fountain is a series of 24 photographs by Guggenheim fellow Andrea Modica’s focus on a slaughterhouse family of Fountain, Colorado. The city houses a community of families tied together by the realities of war and the business of government. Her work captures poignant images of children unfazed by the viewers who will analyze their existence, feel sympathy, and ask questions that cannot be answered. The current exhibitions run through January 17. BMoCa is at 1750 13th St. For more information, visit www.bmoca.org or call 303-443-2122.
