LYONS – The newly formed Art Club meeting at Lyons Middle/Senior High School art room was launched on December 7 by the also newly formed Lyons Art Mentors Group. Fourteen students attended the meeting after school and seven Lyons Art Mentors introduced themselves with samples of their work. Mentors stayed for the remainder of the meeting and helped students with a clay project, making a holiday decoration.

Lyons Art Mentor, Marie McCreery discusses art mentoring program with 6th grade student Marisha Hoag while she works on an Art Club project at Lyons Middle/Senior High School.
Interested students are being encouraged to pair up with a mentor and work on an art project next semester. In fact several have already done so. There are ten art mentors at this time offering knowledge and expertise in textile art, computer graphics, painting, pottery, collage, mixed media, kiln worked glass, photography and creative writing. Students and mentors showed a great deal of enthusiasm for participating in this opportunity.
A sheet with a short biography of each mentor’s background is available from art teacher Stephanie Busby, who is enthusiastic about this chance for her students to expand their art experiences. Parents and students may want to check out the biographies to consider possibilities. Also a release form for parents to sign is available.
The Lyons Art Mentorship will continue through the second semester and latecomers are welcome, both as mentors and as participating students. The goal will be to finish at least one project by April and the group hopes to plan a public art show for the community in May. As the program develops, mentors will work fairly independently with the students making initial contact through the art teacher. The student and the mentor will plan their project and decide how often and where they want to meet. If any other community members are interested in mentoring a student, please call Jill Musser, 303-823-5121, email jillmusser@mail.com, or call Marie McCreery at 303-823-5722.
