LYONS – Julie Van Domelen is the new mayor of Lyons. Van Domelen won the mayor race in a landslide. She received 614 votes and her opponent, Tina Schooler, received 117 votes. There were 10 mail-in ballots which named several other write in candidates.

The mail-in ballot election drew a large number of voters, 741, which is considered a big turnout for a mid term election. Voters were allowed to mail in their ballots or deliver the ballots to the town hall or to vote in person on election day, April 7.
Van Domelen is currently the chairperson of the Lyons Planning and Community Development Commission, PCDC. “I will resign from the PCDC at the next meeting on Monday (April 13) and after I am sworn in as Mayor, I will appoint another person to chair the PCDC,” she said.
“I want to sit down with the town board and see what their thoughts are and share my thoughts with them,” said Van Domelen. “I have a long punch list of items that I made some notes on from talking to people as I went from door to door. We have a lot of issues facing Lyons, economic development, the eastern corridor, establishing a presence with the state and the county. I feel like I have to hit the ground running because I only have a one-year term before the next election.
Tina Schooler is currently a trustee on the Lyons Town Board and she will continue in that position. “I feel like I can work well with Tina,” said Van Domelen. “Tina is a hard worker and a great person. We have worked on committees together and I respect her opinions.”
Van Domelen will be sworn in as mayor on April 20.

Congrats, Julie! Definitely you are the right woman for the job. I hope that Miya and Josef enjoy being first family. Give them our regards from Yaounde. Not sure if we will visit Colorado this summer, but if we do, we’ll track you down, so you can give us an update on local govt issues! In Cameroon, we are investing heavily in training our mayors…. maybe you should give a seminar….
