Tina Schooler’s Statement

Tina Schuler is running for Mayor.
Tina Schooler was born in Dallas Texas, is married to Bob Schooler and they have four children, Shannon, Shayla, Sam, and Stephanie, and one grandchild, Parker. She was elected as a trustee to the Lyons Town Board in 2008 and is currently serving in that position. She has lived in Lyons since December, 2002.
In 2003 she started a business in Lyons called Special Occasions where she planned all types of events and celebrations for people including weddings, graduations, showers and parties of all kinds. In 2004 she moved the business to Longmont where she kept it open for about a year.
Schooler learned the business from her mother in Dallas. She and her mother ran a wedding-planning business in Texas for several years starting when Schooler was a senior in high school. “It turned into a huge business; it was called the Cottage and we did all the flower arrangements, the catering arrangements, china, everything,” said Schooler. “I took floral design classes and then I attended Southern Methodist University and Texas Tech before I met and married my husband. I studied photography, radio- and TV-news writing and journalism. I loved it. We had NBC affiliates teach some of our classes.”
Tina and Bob have been married for 26 years and after her marriage she worked in retail sales at Macy’s for several years.
Schooler said that the most pressing problem facing Lyons right now is the challenge of stimulating and revitalizing the economy along with developing the eastern corridor of Lyons along U.S. Highway 36. She said that there needs to be a balance between developing sections of Lyons such as the eastern corridor with revitalizing the downtown. One should not be developed at the expense of the other.
“Another issue we have to look at is attracting new business to the downtown,” she said. “The board is currently looking at creating different taxing districts such as urban renewal and a business revitalization district. We are looking at creating a special area where businesses could apply for beer and wine licenses, but it would not allow for a liquor store. We can’t focus totally on the downtown area without also looking at the eastern corridor and balancing the two.”
Schooler is the town board liaison to the Arts and Humanities Council, the Golden Gang, the Lyons Area Advisory Committee on Aging, the Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Improvement Plan Implementation Committee.
Schooler said that she feels called to run for mayor, even though she does not consider herself a politician. She said she is willing to listen to all points of view and work with many different groups and diverse ideas. She feels that her business experience, her real life experience and her work on various committees and the town board have given her the insight and preparation she needs to be the next mayor of Lyons.

Creating an urban renewal district will freeze important taxes that need to go into your schools and emergency services and will not go into the city’s coffers. The new taxes will instead go into the urban renewal authority’s funds.
