Arts & Entertainment News : March / April 2009
Naked in Lyons For most artists, freedom of expression is the basis of their work. In Lyons freedom of expression was challenged when some members of the Lyons Town Board requested the removal of a very small nude painting which they deemed offensive. After it was pointed out that proper procedure was not followed the nude was reinstated.
Ultimately, the board decided to allow the Lyons Council for the Arts and Humanities to decide what art is appropriate and what is not appropriate.
To celebrate the nude and freedom of expression, a group of artists will display their versions and variations on nudes at the Ohm Salon and Art Gallery at 440 Main St. above the Lyons Pharmacy.
An open house and meet-and-greet for the artists will be held at 5 p.m. on April 4 at the Ohm Salon. The show is called Naked in Lyons and will feature local artists Ann Ripley, Sally King and Katherine Weadley. Celebrate the beauty of nakedness from the perspective of local artists. If anyone has any art that they would like to hang in this show please contact Jul Swann. For more information, call 720-220-0311.

Art at the Stone Cup
Julia Lunk continues to show in March. Lindsay Heppner will be displaying her work starting on April 1. Her show is called A Winter Garden and it will include recent paintings. She works in acrylic and pencil.
The paintings are whimsical depictions of trees and birds. The paint is layered with lots of abstract textures in winter scenes. It will be a fun show. For more information, contact lindsayheppner@gmail.com.
Lyons Itinerant Poets
The Lyons Itinerant Poetry Society is featuring poet Katherine West and her husband Jeff Finer on slide guitar (dobro). The event will start at 6:30 p.m. rather than our historical later 7:30 p.m. time on Friday March 20 at the Lyons Town Hall, 432 Fifth Ave.
Please mark your calendars and support live poetry in Lyons. All invited, always free.
Drawing on her experiences in Guatemala and the U.S., West probes notions of awareness and ignorance, innocence and complicity, human and nonhuman violence. To go beyond the tired binaries that tie us to old allegiances of nation, race, gender, ethnicity, we must continuously re-map the world, include the dragons that are always beyond. These poems are wonderfully inventive, both in terms of image and sound. The poet and her musician husband live in Bellevue.
There will be a book signing by West for her new book The Bone Train, Howling Dog Press. This will be followed by invited readers from LIPS and open MIC. For more information, call Sapan 303-823-6477 or Coco Gordon at 303-823-5585, or contact SapanRinpoche@sapanrinpoche.com.
